Saimaa University of Applied Sciences offers varied summer studies. Information technology student Jyri Jussheikki designs webpages as a customer project at the summer school of the Faculty of Technology. At the summer school, students get to test the knowledge and skills they have accumulated during their years of study. The work is performed in groups of 2–4 people.
“Last week, we had a meeting with the customer, based on which we drew up a plan and now the project is underway. The project coding, image editing and media stuff," says Jussheikki.
Jussheikki, who is focusing on IT services for organisations, has not found a summer job yet, but considers summer school a good option compared to sitting at home.
“I thought it much better to come here than to hang around at home doing nothing. I started looking for a summer job in good time, but it is difficult to come up with work in your own field for the summer, especially in Lappeenranta,” says Jussheikki.
“The summer school of the Faculty of Technology provides diverse opportunities to earn study credits. Here you can, for example, complete your job placement by working on customer projects or do your own projects. Alternatively, you can earn study credits by learning a new programming language and teaching it to others,” says Anne Paakko, a supervisor of the summer school of the Faculty of Technology.
The last summer school of the Faculty of Technology started in early-May and will last until midsummer. No new students have been accepted to the degree programme since 2011. This is the last chance for students to earn missing study credits for their degree during the summer.
In addition to students, Saimaa University of Applied Sciences offers summer studies to people from outside the UAS. You can acquaint yourself with the study range on the Saimaa UAS website.
