Degree programme in visual arts

The degree programme is designed to provide students with the skills necessary for work as a visual artist. Depending on their inclination and specialisation, visual artists can be self-employed artists or work in the field of counselling, service, guidance or communication.

The degree programme is based on the management of different forms and tools of expression required in a visual artist's work. During advanced professional studies and elective studies, students can specialise in a chosen field of visual arts according to their interests and skills.

In addition to teaching the necessary working methods and professional technology, the degree programme develops in the students an understanding of a visual artist's work as an entity: the development of the subject from the sketch phase to a finished work of art, safety and health at work, marketing and taxation, and matters related to artists' associations and copyright, which affect the artists' social status. Visual artists must be interested in and capable of working in co-operation with professionals operating in the fields close to visual arts, as well as with other social groups.

The activities of visual artists are characterised by a comprehensive, personal relationship, based on an aesthetic and social appreciation, with the phenomena that they portray and with their working methods. They must also be familiar with modern technology and be able to apply it to their work.

degree programme in emergency care nursing

The aim of the Degree Programme in Emergency Care Nursing is to train specialists in emergency care who are customer-oriented, possess extensive basic skills and are familiar with the theoretical foundation of these skills. The degree programme trains nurses with specialisation in emergency care nursing. The degree includes the core nursing skills and the values, ethical principles and regulations common to all areas of nursing.

Emergency nurses work both independently and as members of nursing teams in outpatient departments and departments of intensive care in hospitals, as well as in various mobile medical service units outside hospitals. The work is characterised by multidisciplinary co-operation in different phases of the emergency care nursing chain. Developing emergency care nursing provides graduates with job opportunities also in planning, development and administrative positions in this field of expertise in both Finland and internationally.

The work of an emergency nurse is based on nursing science, requires special medical expertise and familiarity with related sciences, such as natural and social sciences and education. Successful performance as a emergency nurse requires cognitive, social, psychomotoric, moral and personal skills and the ability to act under physical, psychological and social stress. A considerable part of emergency care nursing work includes critical observation and reflection and requires the ability to make independent decisions and come up with creative nursing solutions that benefit the patient.

The expertise of nursing specialists requires high ethics, a sufficient theoretical foundation, flexibility, an understanding of complex situations and connections, and the ability to identify one's own strengths and limitations. The aim of the Degree Programme in Social Services is to train creative specialists in social services who possess extensive basic skills and are familiar with the theoretical foundation of these skills. Bachelors of Social Services work with individual clients, families and groups. They can also work in different planning, counselling and development positions. They work as specialists in the social sector both independently and in co-operation with professionals from their own field of expertise and with representatives of other fields of expertise. Graduates can be employed in a wide variety of positions, such as educational and counselling positions in pre-school education, pupil welfare, youth work, child welfare and family work; in work with the elderly and the disabled, intoxicant abuser welfare, rehabilitation, social support and service counselling in the public, private or third sector or as self-employed specialists.

The aim of social work is to promote and maintain the individuals', groups' and communities' social ability to function and cope with everyday life. Social service specialists seek to improve the coping skills of clients and their families and to reBACK obstacles to coping.

Social work is based on a multidisciplinary approach, which relies mainly on behavioural and social sciences. The links between theoretical knowledge and practical skills and an investigative approach to work are emphasised during the studies. The students gain competence in the theoretical foundation of rehabilitation and occupational therapy, the prerequisites of human occupation, as well as communication, foreign languages, information processing and scientific activities. During the professional studies, undergraduates gain knowledge of the most important practice-based aspects of occupational therapy, their applications and their scientific foundation, and acquire the skills necessary to carry out independent work as professionals in occupational therapy and rehabilitation.

Occupational profile

Occupational therapists work in different sectors of health care, in social services, in schools and organisations, or as self-employed professionals. They must be innovative and able to cross the conventional boundaries of their field of expertise and identify new applications for occupational therapy. Occupational analysis and selection of therapeutic occupation

Occupation and therapeutic use of occupation is the most important tool of an occupational therapist. Therapeutic occupation is purposeful and meaningful to the client and it depends on the occupational level of the client. Therapeutic occupation is challenging enough and it is enhancing the participation, health and well-being of the client. Occupational therapist can grade and adapt occupations according to clients needs.

Occupational therapy process

Establishing and maintaining therapeutic relationship, and managing occupational therapy process and occupational therapy methods are central elements of entire occupational therapy process. Therapeutic relationships can be short or long-lasting. In collaboration with the client occupational therapist agrees on goals, methods and purposeful intervention in occupational therapy process. Occupational therapist is also responsible of collaborating and informing colleagues and other professionals.

Extent and structure of the degree

The first two years studies take place in Finland and on the third year abroad. During the last summer the students have summer semester studies in Finland .

The duration of this degree programme is 3,5 years, total 8 semesters, including one summer semester.

The aim of the degree programme is to familiarise students with the basics and most important applications of mechanical engineering and machine automation. Graduates have the skills and knowledge necessary for work in specialist and managerial positions in mechanical engineering, manufacturing engineering and maintenance. They are familiar with the interdependency between industry and nature and with environmental technology and the working environment, are able to work in international settings and possess the co-operation and negotiation skills necessary at work.

The mechanical engineering studies are based on the solid foundation of natural sciences, and the undergraduates receive both theoretic and professional instruction from the very first year of study. Studies are geared towards the development of a problem-oriented approach and the utilisation of applications of information technology as engineering tools. During the second year of study, undergraduates draw up personal study plans (HOPS) according to which they wish to carry out their professional studies during the third and fourth years of study.

The degree programme emphasises and develops independence, creativity and the skills necessary for international activities, so that graduates are able to apply their skills independently in an ever-changing, dynamic working environment. The Finnish forest industry functions globally and thus the capabilities of the students to work in international surroundings is an important objective in the degree programme. Degree programme in civil and construction engineering

The aim of the Degree Programme in Civil and Construction Engineering is to train engineers for design, managerial and development positions in the field of civil and construction engineering. Civil engineers who have completed the degree have the basic skills related to civil and construction engineering as well as economic and managerial skills. In addition, they are able to work in international settings and in rapidly changing environments, possess negotiation and co-operation skills, written and oral communication skills and IT skills.
A civil engineer's work can cover the entire construction sector from the design phase to actual building work. The basic studies include mathematical and technical subjects, information technology, communication and foreign languages. The professional studies are divided into modules on the basis of the specialisation, and include the application of theory to practice with the help of exercises, project work and application software.

The degree is structured so that the new competence requirements for designers and supervisors, set by the Finnish Ministry of the Environment, are taken into account.

The aim of the degree programme is that the graduates will:
- be familiar with the technical foundations related to the generation, transmission and consumption of electricity and their most important technical applications;

The learning processes rely strongly on the use of information technology, as the operation of electric circuits can be analysed with the help of a computer more or less in the same way as by making the physical connections in a laboratory. The Centre for Continuing Education and Development Services provides the following services: adult graduate studies, specialist training, second cycle university degree, open university of applied sciences studies, apprenticeship training, supplementary and continuing education, project activities, and business services.
