The Saimaa University of Applied Sciences is hosting an Open Day on Thursday 24 November 2011 from 1:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Skinnarila campus in Lappeenranta. During the Open Day, the new university building will be open to visitors. Information will be available on activities taking place in the building, and on the university’s educational offering. Six guided tours of the new university building will be arranged, but visitors can also tour the premises on their own. Guided tours begin at 1:15, 2:00, 2:45, 4:30, 4:15 and 5:00 at the info desk on the 1st floor. Places visited during the guided tour include the international office, auditorium, fitness hall, premises of the student union SAIKO, administrative premises, study office and work rooms of the teachers of business studies. Publications such as the Taste of Lake Saimaa cook book and the Spirit of Stone are on sale at the staff break room on the 2nd floor. Simulation premises and laser bowling The Faculty of Technology has its stand in the downstairs lobby where visitors can observe laser bowling and a 3D printer creating three-dimensional objects. The printer lays down successive layers of just 0.17mm plastic thread to create a real three-dimensional object. Smaller instruments such as an endoscope are also on display. The lobby also houses an art exhibition displaying the works of art students. Visitors will have the opportunity to observe a lesson in market law taught by Marjut Heikkilä, senior teacher of business studies, between 1:15 and 4:00. A physical examination for teddy bears At the check-up, nursing students weigh and measure the patients, inspect their ears with an otoscope, listen to their heart with a stethoscope, and give a vaccination. Teddies and dolls will receive a health card after the check-up. The objective of the teddy clinic is to offer something fun for the children and at the same time alleviate any fears children may have related to health clinic visits. It also provides an opportunity for children and parents to discuss issues related to health, illness and accidents with the nurses. The teddy clinic is open all day, no appointment required. Open Day at the Finnish Student Health Service unit Buses number 1, 3 and 5 from the Lappeenranta city centre run to the Skinnarila campus. Parking space at the campus is limited. The student and staff restaurant in the new university building is open to visitors throughout the Open Day. The Open Day is open to everyone free of charge. Welcome!
