NEWS FROM SAIMAA UASNewsletter: News from Saimaa University of Applied Sciences MINISTER OF EDUCATION AND SCIENCE JUKKA GUSTAFSSON WILL INAUGURATE A NEW BUILDING OF SAIMAA UAS AT THE SKINNARILA CAMPUS ON TUESDAY 17 JANUARYMinister of Education and Science Jukka Gustafsson will inaugurate the new Saimia building of the Saimaa University of Applied Sciences at the Skinnarila campus on Tuesday 17 January at 12 o'clock. In addition to the Minister, the speakers at the inauguration include Rector Anneli Pirttilä, Chairman of the Board Tuomas Telkkä and Chairman of the Student Union (SAIKO) Board Mikko Valtonen. At the end of the inauguration, the guests are welcome to take a tour of the Skinnarila campus area, jointly occupied by the Saimaa University of Applied Sciences and the Lappeenranta University of Technology (LUT). Saimaa University of Applied Sciences offers three degree programmes in English. More information about application and degree programmes you can find at the new webpage www.saimia.fi/admission. Saimaa University of Applied Sciences has about 3 000 students, almost 400 of them being international degree students. Further information: THE THIRD INNOCITY COMPETITION STARTS ON JANUARY 2012The third InnoCity competition starts on January 2012. Multicultural student teams from the Lappeenranta University of Technology (LUT) and the Saimaa University of Applied Sciences are working on company assignments for four weeks. Everyone can follow the competition through Facebook, YouTube, Flickr and the InnoCity webpage www.innocity.fi. The competitors are already chosen. Further information: THE PHYSICAL TRAINING SERVICES OF SAIMAA UAS AND LUT ARE GOING TO MERGEFrom January 2012 on the physical training and welfare services of Saimaa UAS and LUT (Lappeenranta University of Technology) are going to merge. The merger's name is SaLUT - Saimaan korkeakoululiikunta (SaLUT - university physical training). The name symbolizes cooperation and local character. The word 'salut' is not only a greeting but means 'health and welfare' in the Romanic languages. Further information: LOAS' NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR: BUILDING ON A SOLID FOUNDATIONThe executive director of the Lappeenranta Student Housing Foundation (LOAS) will change on 1 April 2012 with the retirement of Seppo Muukkonen, the foundation's long-time leader. Timo Nurmi, who currently works as LOAS' development director, has been appointed as the new executive director. Nurmi will assume the executive director's tasks at the beginning of 2012. According to Nurmi, in proportion to its student population, Lappeenranta has the highest number of student apartments in Finland. In addition, the town has a well-functioning rental market. However, the Saimaa University of Applied Sciences has moved beside the Lappeenranta University of Technology (LUT) in Skinnarila, which has raised concerns and question among students.
