3.5 years (including one summer semester)
240 credits, including 30 credits of placement

The aim of this program is to provide students with the skills necessary to work in independent managerial, planning, consulting, technical sales and expert positions in the chemical and process industries as well as working in mill projects. The degree programme has been built in close cooperation with the industry.

Finland is the leading country in Europe in terms of educating experts for the forest industry and doing research in the field. South-East Finland is the biggest forest industry production centre in Europe. The degree programme gives the students the possibility to concentrate also on the forest industry processes.

A Bachelor of Engineering in Chemical Engineering can work e.g. as product engineer, product development engineer, sales engineer and purchaser, supervisor, manager and consultant.

The students become acquainted with
- unit operations and mill concepts as well as physical and chemical phenomena of the processes
- the equipment and processes of the chemical and process industries
They also focus on
- environmental issues in the chemical and process industries
- total quality
- automation and electrical planning
- quality.

Plant design systems, process modelling and simulation are studied and practised.

Process engineering and modelling with state-of-the-art design systems, automation, applied chemistry, mechanical and mass transfer processes, thermodynamics, physics and mathematics are examples of the study courses. The studies also include management and economics. Extensive placement periods in industry form an essential part of the studies. Students have the opportunity to prepare their B.Sc. thesis to meet the needs of the industry.

Cooperation argeements
Saimaa University of Applied Sciences has signed cooperation agreements with Stora Enso Ltd, UPM-Kymmene Ltd, Jaakko Pöyry Group and PIRA International. The companies offer tutorial help and practical training opportunities for our students in their agencies in Finland and abroad.

We have cooperation with domestic and foreign universities. Our students can choose courses at other institutions, as well.

We focus on work-related competence and problem solving
Teamwork, collaborative networking and job-related problem solving form an essential part of the studies. Students are encouraged to look at matters from various aspects, and to gather and produce information independently.

Saimaa University of Applied Sciences has currently invested in the facilities and equipment of its process technology laboratory in Imatra. At the beginning of 2006 a laboratory building of about 1,400 m² was completed and the equipment was updated.
