Saimaa University of Applied Sciences has approximately 1,300 workstations connected to the FUNET network. Students can use the workstations whenever the units in which they are located are open. However, the facilities can be used only for study purposes. IT ServicesThe IT Services is responsible for the management of all telephone and information network systems at Saimaa University of Applied Sciences. This includes systems and user rights administration as well as hardware maintenance. There are systems support staff and designers working in each unit and they report to the systems administration manager. Internet servicesInformation on studies and current events and instructions on how to use the information systems are available through the students’ web portal www.saimia.fi/student. The portal includes links to Internet and intranet based services, such as e-mail, students’ websites, records of credits (WinhaWille) and the web-based learning environment (Moodle). Local area network servicesTo be able to use the workstations at Saimaa University of Applied Sciences, students need personal login codes provided by the systems administrator. Authorised users have access to network printers and limited disk space on a network server for private use. Technical supportThe technical support (HelpDesk) organised by the IT Services works to ensure the flawless functioning of hardware and computer systems. The best way to contact the HelpDesk staff when in difficulty is to use the feedback form, which can be found on the web pages. You can also report failures by e-mail, phone or visiting the HelpDesk personally. For additional information on technical support, visit http://it.saimia.fi/hd-en. Guidelines and principles for use of the student email systemThe student email system, student.saimia.fi, is primarily to be used for matters related to studies at Saimia. You might even be required to use your student.saimia.fi email address when conducting official school business over the internet. Your student.saimia.fi email address and usage will end when your graduate from your degree programme. You should clear your email post office boxes when you leave Saimaa University of Applied Sciences, and inform your friends and colleagues of your new email address. Two months after your study rights end, your email address will be automatically removed from the server. Virus protectionThe smooth and safe operation of the email system at Saimia is to everyone's advantage. The school computers have good virus protection and are updated automatically. Every user is an important link in the virus protection plan, and each user is responsible for letting the computer support staff know if they become aware of instances of improper or inappropriate computer usage. Information securityThe usernames and passwords given to students are intended personal use only, and should not be given to or used by any other person. In cases of abuse of this privilege, please contact the computer support personnel. |
