Degree Programme in Chemical Engineering in Imatra

Saimaa UAS will not take new students in 2012 to study in the Degree Programme in Chemical Engineering.

Bachelor of Engineering
Degree title in Finnish: insinööri

Duration and extent of studies
3.5 years (including summer semesters)
240 ECTS, including 30 ECTS of placement

The aim of the Degree Programme in Chemical Engineering is to provide students with the skills necessary to work in independent managerial, planning, consulting, technical sales and expert positions in the chemical and process industries, as well as forest biorefiniers. The degree programme has been built in close cooperation with the industry.

A Bachelor of Engineering in Chemical Engineering can work e.g. as product engineer, product development engineer, sales engineer and purchaser, supervisor, manager and consultant.

The students become acquainted with:
- unit operations in the chemical and process industries
- forest biorefineries
- environmental issues and sustainable technology
- physical or chemical phenomena
- equipment in the chemical and process industries, and plant design.

They also focus on:
- various mill concepts
- production lines
- mill operations and departments
- operation systems and processes
- automation and electrical planning.

Plant design systems, process modelling and simulation are studied and practised. Process technology, heat and mass transfer, modelling with state-of-the-art design systems, automation, applied chemistry, physics and mathematics are examples of the study courses. The studies also include management and economics. Extensive placement periods in industry form an essential part of the studies. Students have the opportunity to prepare their B.Sc. thesis to meet the needs of the industry. The language of instruction is English.

Cooperation agreements
The Saimaa University of Applied Sciences has signed cooperation agreements with Stora Enso Ltd, UPM-Kymmene Ltd, Jaakko Pöyry Group and PIRA International.

We have cooperation with domestic and foreign universities and universities of applied sciences. Our students can choose courses at other institutions, as well. Our students can choose courses at other institutions, as well.

We focus on work-related competence and problem solving
Teamwork, collaborative networking and job-related problem solving form an essential part of the studies. Students are encouraged to look at matters from various aspects, and to gather and produce information independently.

The Saimaa University of Applied Sciences has got a modern process technology laboratory in Imatra with updated pilot equipment.
