Saimaa University of Applied Sciences requires new students to have their own laptop computer in use, preferably acquired before studies start. Mobile devices (phone, tablets) are helpful but they may not suffice for all the needs in studies.

There is a WiFi network in the university premises for students to use. The laptop battery life should be long as recharging the device is not possible in all the premises.

Hardware recommendations:

  • at least a ’Home’ level computer, as tested by the PCMark 10 benchmark software
  • processor: min. Intel i3 or equivalent (i5 or equivalent recommended)
  • main memory (RAM): 4 Gt or more, especially for engineering studies
  • mass storage: capacity 128 Gt or more (SSD drive recommended)
  • display: min. 13-inch Full HD or better
  • support for wireless network 5 GHz (min. 802.11 n/ac)
  • supported version of the operating system: recommended versions include Windows 7 or newer, macOS 10.10 or newer
  • web cam, microphone, headphones
  • battery life allowing several hours of working on the laptop
  • external display interface

Extended guarantee period is recommended whenever possible (a regular guarantee period is one year). Students in the faculty of technology (engineering) should have a mouse and an external display, or a larger laptop display, to facilitate the use of graphic design software.

When acquiring the hardware, the student should consider that the included operating system supports the software applications needed in studies. Basic software is available for almost all operating systems, but industry-specific software may be available only for certain operating system versions. In addition, the software to be used on the laptop may require upgraded hardware.

The students may, at no extra cost, install the latest Microsoft O365 Pro software package on their devices. A so-called student version is available also of most engineering design software applications.
