Study objectives

The Degree Programme in Tourism and Hospitality Managemenet prepares students to meet and manage today's clients' high demands for high-class and innovative services.

Students will learn how to design hotel, restaurant and tourism services, how to manage a business and how to be a succesful leader. Sales and marketing skills are also needed, as well as intercultural communication and versatile language skills.

Study contents

The hotel and restaurant business is a constantly growing worldwide industry, which needs modern, multicultural, customer-oriented experts with good leadership and project management skills.

The courses are carried out using diverse learning methods from lecturers and group works to project-based studies in our own restaurant and in co-operation with local companies. Online learning is also a part of everyday teaching methods.

The education comprises programme-specific basic studies, advanced professional studies, elective studies, a Bachelor's thesis and placement. Studies are carried out entirely in English and they include compulsory studies or placement abroad.

Final project

The Bachelor’s thesis for the UAS degree is a broad course of study for the preparation of the students in planning and researching areas for development, and working as an expert in their field of study. The extent of study for the bachelor’s thesis is 15 ECTS.

The goals of the thesis for second cycle polytechnic degree programmes are to develop and demonstrate the student’s ability to apply research to practice, to solve problems in the workplace, and to be experts in the field.

Career opportunities

The graduates from the degree programme will work as experts or middle managers in hotel, restaurant and tourist sector.

They can be employed on different management, planning and development duties such as reception managers, restaurant managers, hotel sales managers, area managers in restaurant chains or destination developers.

However, to be an effective manager, practical, operational expertise is essential. This particular aspect is accomplished through the compulsory placement period.

Internationalization

International activities are considered to be an essential development area at Saimaa University of Applied Sciences, and the range of foreign partners is wide and well-established.

Saimaa University of Applied Sciences co-operates with different universities in Russia, Asian countries and Europe in the fields of student, teacher and trainee exchange and different kinds of joint development projects.

The standing point of the RDI at the Saimaa University of Applied Sciences is to create new lucrative solutions both to everyday life and business.

Tuition fee

Non-EU/EEA students are subject to tuition fees. The annual tuition fee for students in Bachelor´s degree programmes is 5 400 e/year. Applying for the 50 % scholarship is possible after the first academic year. To be able to use the given option, you must be able to study full time during the first academic year - meaning, that you must complete a minimum of 55 ECTS credits of studies that are included in your personal study plan.
